SAY "CHEEZY"

MELT BANANA SHOW RULED. THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO CAME OUT. SO MANY GOOD BANDS & GREAT FRIENDS. I'M SURE WE WERE THE LOWLIGHT OF THE NIGHT.

IN OTHER NEWS, MIXING IS ALMOST COMPLETE FOR OUR SPLIT 7"s. WE HOPE TO HAVE AT LEAST ONE IF NOT TWO OUT BY EARLY 2014.WE'RE STILL LOOKING FOR PEOPLE / LABELS TO HELP PUT THEM OUT, SO PLEASE GET IN TOUCH IF YOU ARE INTERESTED. PLUS, YOU WILL GET TO HEAR THE SONGS EARLIER THAN EVERYONE ELSE!

LASTLY, ANOTHER FAVORABLE REVIEW OF OUR DEMO. THIS ONE IS FROM BRANDO CALRISSIAN (I'M SURE IT'S HIS REAL NAME) AND APPEARED ON GONZO KARAOKE:

What has four legs, lives in Milwaukee & has the power to make you get up and wanna’ punch something? No, it’s not a golden retriever made out of cheese with a stereo blasting Crossed Out strapped to it’s back. It’s LIFES! An amazing two-piece band (bass & drums) featuring members of Get Rad, Conquest Of Death, Party By The Slice, and Kungfu Rick. They sound mean, fast as fuck & super catchy (Like if Artimus Pyle was an insane bass-driven PV band) . But my favorite thing about this group is that they bring something new to the table all while having a sound that reminds you of the classic west coast powerviolence bands you’ve come to know & love. Who knew this kind of brutal musical depravity could exist in Wisconsin? This demo contains 8 songs that are sure to melt your brain. From the opening track “New Flag” to “Nothing New” (just try to resist the urge to jump up and start moshing around in you living room while listening to this, I fucking dare you!). Hell, there’s even a DEATHTHREAT cover at the end. I see many awesome releases for this band in the future, so jump on this free download now. While you’re at it, get in contact with them and request they come to your town and blow it up. You won’t regret it.
HE IS RIGHT ABOUT ONE THING, THERE WILL BE MANY AWESOME RELEASES IN OUR FUTURE!
THANKS FOR READING!

AND TWO MORE REVIEWS

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS LISTENED TO AND/OR PURCHASED OUR DEMO SO FAR. WE HAVE BEEN FLOORED BY THE FEEDBACK. AND SINCE WE'RE ON THE SUBJECT, HERE ARE TWO MORE REVIEWS:

FROM DAMNED BY LIGHT:

Lifes is a bass & drums-duo from Milwaukee, and this tape is their debut demo. It's stylish but still rough and DIY-looking, and comes with a mini-booklet including the lyrics and some info about the band and the demo's recordings sessions - written in all caps, of course!

I read somewhere that the band's members have a long history in punk-bands that I've just never heard about, so it comes as no surprise to hear that both guys handle their instruments well and with the needed confidence and rage. The songs range from chaotic powerviolencey hardcore to more moody and sludgy down-tempos. The demo varies a lot during its short play, but overall the songs' mixture of brute primitivism, hostility and all-out aggression with two vocalists shouting their lungs out sounds very natural.

The soundscape is rough and a bit muffled, but it suits the band's approach; the slow rhythm-based passages sound heavy and make you nod your head, and the fastest bits sound truly chaotic. Although the songs have some definite caveman-characteristics in them, they also demonstrate that the duo actually can handle their instruments and know how to imbue some musicality and logic into the seemingly out-of-control crudity.

I'm absolutely fond of this demo. It's the band's debut and as such shows some characteristics of a young band, like the wide spectrum of tempos and moods that occasionally vary very suddenly, but I find this unpolished and untamed roughness to be a part of the tape's appeal as it keeps the listener on his/her toes. Lifes has a lot of options on where to go from here; do they make things a bit more musical, do they focus more on the slower or the faster pieces, do they keep their sound primitive or fine-tune it... or do they keep on doing whatever they want and create a mayhem. Time will tell.

Aside of the tape's end part that could sound a bit tighter and me being a bit unsure of what is it that the band actually wants to do, I have very little complaints. I hope I'll be hearing more from this band in the near future.

4 / 5

AND FROM THIS NOISE IS OURS:

I had some computer issues yesterday and wasn't able to write as many reviews as I wanted to. I'm redressing the balance today. Firstly, I wanted to start with something fast! This is the 2013 demo from Milwaukee bass/drum punk duo Lifes. Milwaukee seems to be super productive right now when it comes to fast bands, maybe due to the influence of Protestant, the label Halo of Flies and the other rad bands that hail from there. There's actually a link between Lifes and Halo of Flies because Lifes features current/ex-members of fellow Milwaukee bands like Conquest of Death and Get Rad, who coincidentally had a 7" release via that very label. Anyway, punk education over with, lets talk more about this demo. The demo was self-released in April of this year on tape and features eight tracks, including two covers of songs by Swing Kids and Deathreat.
Tracklist:-
1. New Flag
2. Tables Turned
3. Expectations
4. Disease (Swing Kids cover)
5. Northing New
6. Party By The Lifes
7. Fucking Thief
8. King James Version of Shit (Deathreat cover)

I've found that since I started this blog, I've been gravitating more towards bands that act with integrity and do things their own way. Whether it is recording and releasing their own demos and not expecting to be picked up by labels straight away. The metal/punk stratosphere is already made up of way too many bands who've released demos and think they're god's gift to music, so this is where bands like Lifes mean so much to me. This tape was home recorded and that gives it that genuine feeling. New Flag kicks it off with a thick, deep bass tone and drums that flail in ever which way. The vocals are deep bellowed screams that match the music’s furious pace and there’s even some sludge/doom textures lurking within. Tables Turned last twelve sections yet Lifes still manage to get a groove out of it.
The pace slows right down with Expectations, where that sludge persuasion creeps back in with an extended instrumental intro morphing into some hellish fastcore. Disease is a Swing Kids cover, which builds in volume and intensity for the first twenty seconds, before exploding into something quite different to the original. The bass/drum take on the song is good though and Lifes don’t just try to copy the band they're covering. That sludgy reference is still present in Nothing New. I guess the slower parts go hand in hand with a lot of fastcore now as it breaks things up.  If it's melody you're after though, you won't find it as prevalently present here. Party By The Lifes is eight seconds of brief bass rumble and Napalm Death inspired grind. Fucking Thief is Lifes longest original song and doesn't feel out of place at all. Slower instrumental sections again dominate the song, but the thickness of the bass almost makes it seem like an actual lead guitar. Ending with a cover of Deathreat brings the tape to a chaotic end. The menacing bass melody lurches forward and the hardcore sensibilities of the song give the tape a different atmosphere.

There's punk attitude a plenty and a sound, which you'll instantly feel at home with if you like your fastcore/power violence stuff. The mixture of fast and slow dynamics and the DIY recording mean that this demo is full of character and heart. Lifes don't care about trends and fashion; they play music for the good times and music that scene kids won't understand. This is a grower and one that will keep growing. Keep your eyes in Milwaukee because it's gonna be raised to the ground soon, if Lifes have their way!
Blow of those Sunday morning cobwebs by checking the entire demo out below:-

The demo is available from the above bandcamp page as a name-your-price-download, but you can also buy the tape too.

TWO MORE REVIEWS THAT MADE US FEEL PRETTY GOOD ABOUT OURSELVES.

FROM GRINDTODEATH.COM:

What is best in life? To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.
Water Torture might be the current Kings of bass and drums powerviolence scene, but Milwuakee’s boisterous duo LIFES aren’t like to recognise such a crown and still keep their unyielding loyalty to the old guard of 90’s era chunky elastic bass and drum hardcore acts. LIFES are hardcore subsided into the top-soil powerviolence strata and throughout their 9 minute scrap around a persistent fetor of this-band-is-my-anger-managment-and-the-only-thing-stopping-me-from-going-ape-shit hardcore therapy becomes the justification for the bands low hanging knotty burly bass grooves complimented by equally low end congested bellows. There is a dash of feral adventurism in those bass progressions too, right from the get go launching track New Flag acquaints us with those nimble bass swirls, a fluttering trait that we see throughout scattered across a bedrock of traditional bass and drum type hardcore, but other times things go a bit in the backburner albeit temporarily as exemplified in Expectations where they let the bass simmer and saturate the atmosphere in static drudgery hulking forward in wide pleasant lunges.  What is best in LIFES? To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear Powerviolence.
http://grindtodeath.com/zine/review-lifes-demo-2013

AND FROM TIGHTTOTHENAIL.COM:
There seems to be an influx of people starting two-person powerviolence acts. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, this one question will always surface: “do they sound like Iron Lung?”.
Lifes are a two piece from Milwaukee that feature members from bands like Get Rad and Conquest for Death. They employ a Godstomper style; just drums and bass, clearly differing from all the other seven string and drum acts, which have become many and frequent. This demo here isn’t the best recording, but it’s the type of basement recording that launches bands into the stratosphere. It grows on the listener. How many people ever heard Man is the Bastard and said immediately how amazing they were?

The demo starts off with “New Flag”, an anti-government statement seeped in crust punk ethos. Upon first listen one could say they’re just another powerviolence act, but Lifes mixes it up. They play a form of hardcore crust with the awkward stop-start PV influence which really isn’t heard in the “scene”. “Expectations” starts off with a sludge induced breakdown that leads into machine-gun snare drumming, culminating with fastcore goodness. It breaks down into a two-step riff and the song finishes. Examining this, there’s a clear influence from those old PV acts without necessarily hero worshipping them. There’s enough here to segregate Lifes from the rest of the pack; they mix up their assault and said assault is timed well. Too many times are there tracks by other acts that opt for the fast and the heavy; Lifes is different altogether. Not only do they play what powerviolence should be, they change their style within songs. “Fucking Thief” is an example. The changing of style, the changing of signature — Lifes are running the gamut on the older style of powerviolence, the one crafted by acts like Neanderthal. Of course, no PV demo would be complete without “joke” songs, like “Party by the Lifes”, which is an eight-second speed attack.

Lifes are in middle of a scene which heralds Infest and Man Is The Bastard, but too many acts opt to play like the former because the latter proves to be too difficult. There’s no hero worship here, there's an act trying to break the mold of what powerviolence is. Lifes adds creativity to their music in a scene which dismisses it. It’s one thing to attack relentlessly, and it is another to step back and approach a genre differently. Without that kind of creativity, we would be stuck forever looping the same tracks by the same bands for eternity.

THREE DEMO REVIEWS, ONE VIDEO & THREE NEW PLACES TO GET THE DEMO

SOME MORE REVIEWS OF THE DEMO. FIRST ONE IS FROM TERMINAL ESCAPE, BUT HE LIKES QUITE A BIT OF CRAP, SO TAKE IT WITH A GRAIN OF SALT:

More tapes from bands made up of people I have played in bands with. This two-piece from Milwaukee features the drummer from CONQUEST FOR DEATH (also PEOPLE AGAIN, THE LOVE MOVEMENT, PARTY BY THE SLICE and others) and the guitarist from HIGH ON CRIME (also SEVEN DAYS OF SAMSARA, PARTY BY THE SLICE, KUNG FU RICK, LUKE SKAWALKER and others) - and the result of their damage is every bit as monumental as you hope it will be. Uncompromising lyrically and musically, it should come as no surprise that two people responsible for such personal and poignant vitriol would also crank out breathless blown out blasts of hardcore. SWING KIDS and DEATHREAT covers along with the members' lineage will give you a pretty good idea of what you're in for here, but LIFES sound even angrier and more focused than you might expect from two happily married and relatively recent fathers...but that's how lifes goes I guess.

http://terminalescape.blogspot.com/2013/06/lifes.html

NEXT IS FROM SOME WILL NEVER KNOW ZINE FROM THE NETHERLANDS:

Lifes from Milwaukee is doing its powerviolence thing combined with oldschool rough hardcore. Their first demo is recorded in a cramped room above the BBC on the east side of Milwaukee. Mixing was done by Dave in his living room next to his two snoring dogs.
The production is rough, the band is too pissed and loud so I can’t believe the dogs stayed asleep. Dave had to give them some sleep medicine. Lifes music can be described as a total fuck you towards modern society and politics. These dudes vent their frustration in eight songs including covers of Swing Kids and Deathreat. Their rage in ‘New Flag’ and ‘Tables Turned’ is over before you noticed.
It’s not only ultrafast stuff what they make. The own song ‘Fucking Thief’ even lasts for two minutes (almost). This song is the perfect warming up with the crust and His Hero is Gone vibe before the d-beat crust cover of Deathreat (who was active in the same time frame as His Hero is Gone of course) kicks in.
‘Expectations’ is starting with a sludge part, a drum roll and BAM full throttle again. The cover ‘Disease’ from Swing Kids explains their love for dissonant screamo and their own material has a slight influence of this as well, which is good thing. I am totally into the diversity of this demo and Lifes can evolve into many directions.
Don’t expect tight played fancy hardcore, Lifes is just going wild on their instruments, pays respect to their influences and loathes their anger about the same topics that are still valid in 2013.
http://www.swnk.org/reviews/lifes-demo-2013/

AND LASTLY IS A FROM THRASH HITS IN THE UK AND THEIR "IF YOU BUY ONE THING THIS WEEK" FEATURE:
The best thing about running a new feature like If You Buy One Thing This Week is that we can make up the rules as we go along. Shall we do a fancy limited-edition 7″ single this week? Should we do a big new album that’s come out this week that’s got a tsunami of pre-release hype around it? Should we do an old classic that’s suddenly back in the public eye for some reason? Or should we do a tape/download release from a two-man powerviolence/noise band from Milwaukee that you’ve almost certainly never heard of?
Yeah, let’s do that last one this week. Let’s talk about LIFES.
LIFES emailed us (in ALL CAPS, which is why we’re going to all them LIFES in capitals) last week because they’d seen us do some reviews of a couple of bands on Halo of Flies, a label run by an old bandmate of theirs. And hey, that’s enough of a hook to get our attention: they read our site, and they associate with people who put out records that we want to write about. Bands who just email us the same nonsense that they’ve sent to every other heavy music blog on the planet, please take note: this is a far better method of getting your music from our email inbox into our ears than your usual spam.
Bloody hell, it’s a bit fierce, isn’t it? You can buy it right damn now should you so wish, by heading on over to LIFE’s official Bandcamp page, where they are selling digital copies of their demo on a pay-what-you-like basis. You could buy it for absolutely nothing if you wanted, but then you’d be that guy. The tight guy. The guy that doesn’t get his round in at the bar. The guy who doesn’t pay for his records. Yeah, don’t be that guy.
You can also buy it on cassette for $4 (plus shipping & tax) through this link here. Normally we turn our noses up at tape-releases because, y’know, it’s a ridiculous format that only gets releases for the most hipster-ish of bands….and also bands who don’t give two flying figs about sound quality, because they are meant to sound noisy as all hell. We’ll let you figure out which one of these categories LIFES fit into.

FIRST REVIEW AND SOME OTHER STUFF.

HI. FEW THINGS. HERE IS THE FIRST REVIEW OF OUR DEMO:

Lifes is a two piece band from Milwaulkee, Wisconsin who formed in January of 2013.  Lifes features former and current members of Get Rad, Conquest Of Death, Party By The Slice, and Kungfu Rick.  Lifes is a drums and bass powerviolence terrorism outfit who play a loud, ugly, and abrasive style of music that incorporates elements of hardcore, punk, and powerviolence within their sound.  This is the band's self released eight song demo, which was released via bandcamp and on cassette on April 13th, 2013.  Overall, Lifes have absolutely brought the goods on their eight song demo.  Lifes shred their way through eight songs in just over nine minutes.  Overall, this demo makes for a caustic, heavy, and ultra pissed listen.  Seriously, I can't believe Lifes has such a killer sound despite not having a guitarist.  This shit is off the hook.  Highly recommended.  Lifes is an absolute must listen for fans of Iron Lung, God's America, and Needles.

IT WAS DONE BY ELEMENTARY REVOLT. YOU CAN READ IT AND MANY OTHER REVIEWS HERE:

http://elementaryrevolt2.blogspot.com

WE ALSO GOT A NICE WRITEUP ON THE MOSTLY MIDWEST BLOG:

Members of Milwaukee veterans Get Rad have a new project up their sleeves, and they’ve just released their debut eight-track demo. If boasting members from their skate punk contemporaries in Get Rad isn’t enough to peak your interest, consider that they’re a two piece — just a bass player and a drummer — whose sound seems somehow all the more full for it. LIFES‘ muddy vocals, awash with political lyricism and bent on awareness, touches on nationalism, colonialism, gun control, and even, in true Milwaukee hardcore fashion (apparently), pizza. If fastcore brimming with meaning is your thing (it should be), here’s your weekly fix. Hit up their store envy page for cassette copies of their demo or download it from their bandcamp for name your price.
