More tapes from bands made up of people I have played in bands with. This two-piece from Milwaukee features the drummer from CONQUEST FOR DEATH (also PEOPLE AGAIN, THE LOVE MOVEMENT, PARTY BY THE SLICE and others) and the guitarist from HIGH ON CRIME (also SEVEN DAYS OF SAMSARA, PARTY BY THE SLICE, KUNG FU RICK, LUKE SKAWALKER and others) - and the result of their damage is every bit as monumental as you hope it will be. Uncompromising lyrically and musically, it should come as no surprise that two people responsible for such personal and poignant vitriol would also crank out breathless blown out blasts of hardcore. SWING KIDS and DEATHREAT covers along with the members' lineage will give you a pretty good idea of what you're in for here, but LIFES sound even angrier and more focused than you might expect from two happily married and relatively recent fathers...but that's how lifes goes I guess.

NEXT IS FROM SOME WILL NEVER KNOW ZINE FROM THE NETHERLANDS:
Lifes from Milwaukee is doing its powerviolence thing combined with oldschool rough hardcore. Their first demo is recorded in a cramped room above the BBC on the east side of Milwaukee. Mixing was done by Dave in his living room next to his two snoring dogs.
The production is rough, the band is too pissed and loud so I can’t believe the dogs stayed asleep. Dave had to give them some sleep medicine. Lifes music can be described as a total fuck you towards modern society and politics. These dudes vent their frustration in eight songs including covers of Swing Kids and Deathreat. Their rage in ‘New Flag’ and ‘Tables Turned’ is over before you noticed.
It’s not only ultrafast stuff what they make. The own song ‘Fucking Thief’ even lasts for two minutes (almost). This song is the perfect warming up with the crust and His Hero is Gone vibe before the d-beat crust cover of Deathreat (who was active in the same time frame as His Hero is Gone of course) kicks in.
‘Expectations’ is starting with a sludge part, a drum roll and BAM full throttle again. The cover ‘Disease’ from Swing Kids explains their love for dissonant screamo and their own material has a slight influence of this as well, which is good thing. I am totally into the diversity of this demo and Lifes can evolve into many directions.
Don’t expect tight played fancy hardcore, Lifes is just going wild on their instruments, pays respect to their influences and loathes their anger about the same topics that are still valid in 2013.

AND LASTLY IS A FROM THRASH HITS IN THE UK AND THEIR "IF YOU BUY ONE THING THIS WEEK" FEATURE:
The best thing about running a new feature like If You Buy One Thing This Week is that we can make up the rules as we go along. Shall we do a fancy limited-edition 7″ single this week? Should we do a big new album that’s come out this week that’s got a tsunami of pre-release hype around it? Should we do an old classic that’s suddenly back in the public eye for some reason? Or should we do a tape/download release from a two-man powerviolence/noise band from Milwaukee that you’ve almost certainly never heard of?
Yeah, let’s do that last one this week. Let’s talk about LIFES.
LIFES emailed us (in ALL CAPS, which is why we’re going to all them LIFES in capitals) last week because they’d seen us do some reviews of a couple of bands on Halo of Flies, a label run by an old bandmate of theirs. And hey, that’s enough of a hook to get our attention: they read our site, and they associate with people who put out records that we want to write about. Bands who just email us the same nonsense that they’ve sent to every other heavy music blog on the planet, please take note: this is a far better method of getting your music from our email inbox into our ears than your usual spam.
Bloody hell, it’s a bit fierce, isn’t it? You can buy it right damn now should you so wish, by heading on over to LIFE’s official Bandcamp page, where they are selling digital copies of their demo on a pay-what-you-like basis. You could buy it for absolutely nothing if you wanted, but then you’d be that guy. The tight guy. The guy that doesn’t get his round in at the bar. The guy who doesn’t pay for his records. Yeah, don’t be that guy.
You can also buy it on cassette for $4 (plus shipping & tax) through this link here. Normally we turn our noses up at tape-releases because, y’know, it’s a ridiculous format that only gets releases for the most hipster-ish of bands….and also bands who don’t give two flying figs about sound quality, because they are meant to sound noisy as all hell. We’ll let you figure out which one of these categories LIFES fit into.
